Pinterest Celebrates International Transgender Day of Visibility

Alec Sutherland will host a 'get ready with me' session on Pinterest TV

Pinterest is honoring International Transgender Day of Visibility Thursday with actions including highlighting trans creators, sharing data about related searches on its platform and supporting trans-led and trans-focused organizations.

The company said in a blog post Thursday, “Pinterest is where anyone can freely discover how to create a life they love, and that includes our trans and non-binary Pinners. Over the past year, searches for trans pride have increased 80% on Pinterest, and for International Transgender Day of Visibility, we are proudly standing with our trans community on Pinterest and in the world.”

Alec Sutherland will host a “get ready with me” session on Pinterest TV, taking viewers through makeup trends, as part of a collaboration between Pinterest, Black trans creator Qiana Sanders and gender-inclusive beauty startup Fluide. Pinners can register here and tune in Thursday at 3 p.m. PT/6 p.m. ET.

Pinterest shared the following findings gleaned from internal search data comparing the period of Jan. 29 to Feb. 27, 2022, with Jan. 29 to Feb. 27, 2021:

Pinners are increasingly searching for trans and nonbinary topics such as “transmasc aesthetic” (up five times year-over-year), “transgirl” inspiration (66%), and “nonbinary aesthetic fashion” (five times).

Other trends around fashion and lifestyle include “transmasc haircut” (35 times), “trans tips” (72%), “non binary wedding outfit” (eight times) and “nonbinary prom outfit” (10 times).

Many Pinners are also increasingly searching for trans folks in pop culture for inspiration, with searches for “Hunter Schafer hair” up three times, “Kim Petras” up 77%, “Ruby Rose video” 71%, “MJ Rodriguez” 54% and “Gigi Goode looks” 53%.

Pinterest said people are also searching for ways to express their pride through relatable and humorous content, as well as educational materials. In addition to “trans pride” searches increasing 80%, “non binary pride” doubled, “trans humor” is up 22 times and searches for “queer books” are up three times.

In addition to supporting outside organizations, Pinterest is celebrating its trans employees with one week of community programming, guest speakers and other activities.
